Depending on your fabric and batting choice, the general rule is to press with a dry iron on a low heat. A high heat can cause a poly cotton or polyester batting to melt, while moving the iron around the fabric can stretch and distort it.
You can cover delicate fabrics such as silks and linens, or metallic embroidery threads with a cotton cloth before pressing.
Let the weight and low heat of the iron do your work for you!
